The new Volkswagen ID.5 electric SUV coupe will be available in the spring of 2022

Elegant and dynamic design, excellent aerodynamics, and long-range define the new Volkswagen ID.5 electric SUV coupe. The new Volkswagen ID.5 and the Volkswagen ID.5 GTX with Dualmotor All-Wheel-Drive are the ID family’s new top models and, like all ID models, are based on the MEB modular electric car platform from Volkswagen.

“ID.5 shows the way in terms of design: aerodynamic, expressive, sporty and – thanks to the MEB platform – with short overhangs in front and behind,” says Jozef Kabaň, head of Volkswagen Design. “Therefore, we can give the car a large and spacious interior despite the dynamic roofline. It has not been possible that way so far. “

ID5 electric SUV

Volkswagen’s new ID5 electric SUV coupe has an independent and charismatic design expression from all angles. The unique LED technology with the light strip on the front (optional) and the eye-catching headband on the rear clearly show that ID5 is a member of the ID family, but the special front bumper, the lacquered door panels, and the new roofline distinguish the new e-SUV coupe from ID.4. The expressive coupe design has a high recognition value. In the GTX version, ID.5 has an even more dynamic appearance with the larger air intake and the standard-fitted IQ.Light-LED-Matrix headlights with intelligent high beam and 3D-LED taillights.

The new coupe design and lounge-like interior go hand in hand without compromise, emphasizing the innovative concept in Volkswagen’s ID models. Despite the coupe-like design, the ID.5 has only 12 mm less headroom at the rear seat than the Volkswagen ID.4. However, the long wheelbase of 2766 mm provides the same space conditions in the cabin that you normally have in a significantly larger SUV, and you also do not compromise on the size of the trunk, which is 549 liters. The interior is stylish, sporty, and exclusive. The top sports seats, which are available as an option, are characterized by perforated ID logos in the upper area of the backrests and give the interior extra sports appeal.

The state-of-the-art digital cockpit is based on a simple and user-friendly operating concept. The 5.3-inch driver display and the 12-inch touch screen infotainment system have high resolution and impress with sharp and clear views, and as an option augmented reality head-up display is offered. The new Volkswagen ID.5 electric SUV comes with the new ID Software 3.0, which among other things, improves the natural voice operation (“Hello ID.”). It is now informative and allows online access to information from the cloud. We Connect services give real-time online traffic information, online map updates, charging station information, network radio, and other features to drivers.

The new software generation allows for updates OTA “over the air” and activation of new functions, so ID.5 is up-to-date for many years to come. Innovative assistance systems such as Travel Assist with collective data allow for an even more relaxed driving experience, as the system is foresighted and adapts the driving to the traffic conditions further ahead on the route. In addition, the new Park Assist Plus (optional) with memory function can take over the steering and perform parking maneuvers if the driver wishes.

With the Car2X communication, Volkswagen takes safety to a new level. Data from compatible cars from Volkswagen’s model program and signals from the infrastructure within a radius of up to 800 m can be read out locally in fractions of a second and warn of dangerous places, accidents, and stationary traffic. ID. Light in the cockpit visually supports the warnings.

Volkswagen’s 4599 mm (ID.5 GTX: 4582 mm) long e-SUV coupe will be launched in 2022 with three different engine variants. The new Volkswagen ID.5 Pro (175 hp) and Pro Performance (204 hp) are equipped with an electric motor on the rear axle, where VW ID.5 GTX (system output: 299 hp) has a 109 hp electric motor on the front axle and a 204 hp on the rear axle and drives with Dualmotor-All-Wheel-Drive. In addition, the car’s driving dynamics manager connects the control systems to the driveline and chassis and regulates the suspension characteristics if ID.5 is equipped with the adaptive electronically controlled DCC chassis (optional).

“The electronic driving dynamics manager is a pioneering development from Volkswagen,” says Thomas Ulbrich, who is the brand’s chief executive of technical development. “We have connected it with other important operating systems, and in ID.5 GTX, it also works with Dualmotor All-Wheel-Drive. This means that the sporty driving pleasure, grip, and driving safety are on a whole new level.”

ID 5

All ID.5 engine variants are coupled with a 77 kWh battery that provides a long range of up to 520 km in VW ID.5 and 480 km (WLTP) in VW ID.5 GTX. The low air resistance values of 0.26 and 0.27 (ID.5 GTX) benefit efficiency and range. And both are further enhanced by the integrated spoiler in the aerodynamically shaped tailgate, which opens far up. To achieve optimal airflow around the car, the electric cooling air blinds in the front of the vehicle only open when necessary. The new Volkswagen ID.5 / ID.5 GTX has a charging power of 135 kW, and on the go, it can “refuel” energy for the next 390 km or 320 km (GTX) within 30 minutes.

With ID.5 and ID.5 GTX, Volkswagen enters a new market segment and thus, as part of the ACCELERATE strategy, adds extra speed to the electric car offensive in all car classes. By 2030, at least 70% of Volkswagen’s sales in Europe will be made up of pure electric cars, equating to over 1 million cars. In North America and China, the share of electric cars must be at least 50%. Volkswagen launches at least one new electric vehicle on the market each year to achieve these goals. In 2030, CO 2 emissions per car have fallen by up to 40%. On its “Way to ZERO,” the group will have a CO2-neutral climate account by 2050 at the latest.

“ID.5 is electric, sporty, and elegant. Our 100% electric premium SUV coupe is another milestone in our ACCELERATE strategy,” says Ralf Brandstätter, the brand’s CEO. “It offers 0-emission driving pleasure for a discerning customer group. With this car, we enter a completely new market segment.”

The new Volkswagen ID.5 and Volkswagen ID.5 GTX are expected to be introduced in April.
